Sydney, capital
of New South Wales, Australia's largest and oldest
city and its jewel, located on the banks of one
of the world’s most spectacular harbours;
pulsing with energy and a dazzling city life.
With a population of almost 4
million, and covering almost 1120 sq. km (700
sq. m), it is a remarkably easy city to move around
in. An excellent train, bus and ferry service
covers all points of the greater metropolitan
area. Roadways, although congested in peak hour
times, are generally well planned and driving
is not too harrowing an experience.
Sydney has the tallest buildings,
the most expensive real estate, some of the best
beaches, the most congested roads and the seediest
nightlife of any Australian city. Most Australians
regard its loud, brash ways with a mixture of
fear and fascination, although Sydneysiders prefer
to think of their city as virile rather than vulgar.
Anyone who has seen pictures
of the place will be familiar with it’s
amazing harbour. Indented with numerous bays and
beaches and crowned by the billowing sails of
the Opera House, this branching waterway is the
presiding icon for the city, as well as for urban
Australia.
Sydney has long since outgrown
the stigma of its convict origins, but the passage
of time has not tamed its spirit. Other Australian
cities may lay claim to the title of the nation's
cultural capital, but Sydney's panache and appetite
for life are unchallenged. A walk among the scantily
clad bathers at Bondi Beach or through the raucous
nightlife district of Kings Cross provides ample
evidence.
Visiting Sydney is an essential
part of an Australian experience. It has joined
the ranks of the great cosmopolitan cities whose
characters are essentially international. What
Sydney offers are style, sophistication, and great
looks - an exhilarating prelude to the continent
at its back door.
With four national parks, Sydney
offers a superb environment to get back to nature,
with opportunities for bushwalking, picnicking,
and adventure activities.
In other words, no matter what
your interests in life, be it cultural, physical
or mental, you’ll find Sydney has it all
and some. Visiting is an experience not to be
missed as the accommodation available is of international
standards and if you have the time and the inclination,
is well worth discovering.
